When Does My Pet Need an Ultrasound?

A look beneath the surface, when symptoms aren't enough.

Ultrasound is a non-invasive way to see internal organs in real time. It's often the next step when something needs a closer, clearer look.

Unexplained vomiting, diarrhea, or a distended abdomen. Ultrasound helps identify GI obstructions, tumors, fluid buildup, pancreatitis, and liver disease — often the things bloodwork and x-rays alone can't fully explain.
Frequent urination, blood in the urine, or difficulty urinating. We evaluate the kidneys, bladder, and urinary tract for stones, infections, and tumors.
If your pet has a heart murmur or irregular heartbeat, an echocardiogram assesses the heart's structure and function — detecting enlargement, valve issues, and fluid accumulation around the heart.
Ultrasound evaluates the size, shape, and texture of the liver and kidneys to help diagnose kidney failure, cysts, tumors, and various liver diseases.
For breeding pets, ultrasound confirms pregnancy, checks fetal health, and monitors for any complications throughout gestation.
Ultrasound can detect tumors in the spleen, liver, and lymph nodes earlier than many other modalities. Earlier detection means more treatment options and better outcomes.
Identifies ascites (fluid in the abdomen) and pleural effusion (fluid around the lungs), helping diagnose the underlying cause and guide next steps.

"Performing small animal ultrasounds since 2008 — over 17 years and thousands of exams."

Dr. Crutchfield graduated from Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph in 2008 and immediately took an interest in ultrasound — a specialty she has built her entire career around.

She spent 7 years in busy private practices in British Columbia and North Carolina before launching her own mobile ultrasound business, and has now been performing ultrasounds on a mobile and in-clinic basis for over a decade.

Originally from North Carolina, Dr. Crutchfield moved to Stuart with her family in 2021 and now serves pet owners and referring veterinarians across the Treasure Coast.

"My Lu Lu had her ultrasound today. She can be a difficult girl, but they knew just how to calmly and decisively handle her. The office plays nice calming music. Dr. Crutchfield explained everything she was seeing — even the not-so-good news — so I knew the next steps right away. Highly recommend."
